Creating “Otter Pond”

February 13, 2020 by Joann Post

Otter Themed Sideboard by the Post Family

The Otter Story Begins

Nature inspires our family to create furniture which tells a story. There is no better gift to humans than the enjoyment of nature, in our opinion. So, seeing an otter in the pond behind our Adirondack workshop was all it took to get our wheels turning.

“Its called Adirondack style furniture, but its actually Adirondack art disguised as furniture”, wrote one of our customers in a review. Selling art for arts sake is not as easy as selling art that can also be functional. If our furniture can inspire an appreciation of nature, and an enjoyment of art, and function as a server, well… who could ask for anything more?

We made a quick sketch of the basic furniture shape

Creating The Furniture Design

The otter seed was planted and then we drew a quick sketch of a furniture shape that would offer us plenty of opportunity for Jillian’s carving. Ryan got to work enhancing and planning. Having just completed carved “trees” which became part of the pub bar at The Point, we decided it would be fun to use that same design element.

Ryan works the carved trees into the structure.

Planning For Success

Although Ryan makes the building look easy, he meticulously plans for every detail. Jillian’s carvings must be integrated flawlessly into the design. The final outcome should be a well thought out, perfectly blended art furniture piece.

Carving is what makes this lady happiest!
We still have lots more to do. The devil really is in the details.
The handles will be carved water botanicals called Pondweed.
We made some changes to the decorating. We chose Youghiogheny hand made stained glass for the upper door panels. The patterning resembles water droplets. Lighting will be added behind.
When water laps over sand, this pattern forms over time. This is the pond bottom. The pond weed “grows” out of the sand and climbs to the “surface” of the water.
A little frog floats about on the surface.
And the otter catches his meal.

A Successful Outcome

We were pleased with the final outcome. There were elements which needed some alterations, even though we thought we had planned for just about everything. Since this piece is unique to us–never to be reproduced again–we needed the necessary time to figure it out. All of that energy from our family into this one piece. One in the entire world.
